Is 50 points of damage in a single blow to a fighter who has 100 hp any more devastating than doing 15 points of damage to a wizard who has only 30? Taking someone half-way to being dead is pretty massive. Plus, unless they're really high level, few thieves or wizards will have more than 50 hp, so 50 hp will kill them anyway, without a system shock. Would the rule be more fair if it were 50% of your hit points lost in a single damage, instead of 50 hp? I can see it being unfair to fighters if we use 50 hp instead of 50%, since they are the ones up front taking the brunt of the damage.
